Barrie Sosinsky There are two means by which clients can remotely access a network: through a virtual private network connection (often through an Internet connection), and through a dial-up connection. Of the two, dial-up networking is the more problematic because it requires that a physical connection be created between the remote client and your dial-up server, and thus requires that the correct number of ports, types of modems, and other devices be correctly deployed. Over time people modify the system and add programs and new versions of older programs to the system. If you know what the role of the computer is on your network, then it is straightforward to inventory the important programs on the system. If not, you need to poke around to create the application program inventory that you may need. http://www.searchNetworking.com/tip/1,289483,sid7_gci904226,00.html?track=NL-314 =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= MANAGE YOUR PRINT SERVERS | Barrie Sosinsky It's been estimated that roughly 15% of all of the costs borne by an IT organization are consumed by the management of print servers; considerably smaller than the amount dedicated to file services, but similar to what is spent managing backups. Often the costs of capital equipment such as servers and printers are known, as are the line items for consumables such as paper and ink, but rarely is the time spent managing printing accounted for. This tip offers advice for streamlining print services to save both time and money. http://www.searchNetworking.com/tip/1,289483,sid7_gci906570,00.html?track=NL-314 ___________________________________________________________________ =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= :::::::::::::::::::::::: ESSENTIAL LINKS :::::::::::::::::::::::::: ___________________________________________________________________ =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= REGULATORS WANT A PIECE OF THE VOIP PIE | SearchNetworking.com At the recent Networking Decisions conference, expert Carrie Higbie explained why government agencies are suddenly interested in VoIP and discussed how to avoid VoIP pitfalls. http://searchnetworking.techtarget.com/qna/0,289202,sid7_gci936871,00.html?track=NL-314 =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= EXPERT ADVICE | Network Measurement/Diagnostics Loki Jorgenson, research director at Apparent Networks offers advice on tool for monitoring network performance and Statistical monitoring vs. real-time performance in this Q&A collection: Q&A: Tools to enhance monitoring and maintenance systems http://searchnetworking.techtarget.com/ateQuestionNResponse/0,289625,sid7_cid553052_tax293255,00.html?track=NL-314 Q&A: Statistical monitoring vs. real-time performance http://searchnetworking.techtarget.com/originalContent/0,289142,sid7_gci924388,00.html?track=NL-314 Click here to learn more about Dr. Jorgenson and to ask him your own network measurement/diagnostic question: http://searchnetworking.techtarget.com/ateExpertBio/0,289623,sid7_cid507001,00.html?track=NL-314 =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= SECURITY TOPS NETWORKING PRIORITY LIST | SearchNetworking.com SearchNetworking.com's annual Networking Report Card survey finds that security is the top priority of many IT professionals.
