TODAY'S FEATURED NETWORK AND SYSTEMS MANAGEMENT TIP

BUILDING AN INCIDENT REPORT
by Barrie Sosinsky

In order to document and respond to network incidents you will need
to thoroughly record the details of the problem. Documentation is
necessary in order to present the activity to management, and,
indeed, will be required should your enterprise decide to proceed
legally against the parties responsible. Almost as bad as the
incident having happened is the feeling that you have missed some
crucial piece of evidence that could help track down and convict the
culprit, or, worse, leave your systems open to another attack.

Take a look at some of the essentials of an incident report here:

MANAGE YOUR GROUP POLICY TEMPLATES | Barrie Sosinsky

It's important to document your organization's use of group policy
templates. However, there are a large amount of these templates to
track, which makes the creation of the inventory very difficult to
do.

But one of the Cool Solutions posted to Novell's Web site can be of
considerable use in this regard.

UNDERSTANDING MALWARE: A LESSON IN VOCABULARY | Mike Chapple

Viruses, worms, Trojan horses - the terminology of malicious code
sounds like some strange mix between a medical reference and a
history textbook! The sea of definitions can be somewhat confusing.
Understanding how each piece of malware works is the first step in
hardening a network against those attacks.

Let's take a look at each of the major types of malicious code and
some of their less notable variations.

LOOKING FOR TROUBLE: ICMP AND IP STATISTICS TO WATCH | Laura Chappell

In this article Laura Chappell shares one of her favorite tools for
network troubleshooting and cybercrime detection and testing -- the
Summary Statistics window provided by EtherPeek. Using the
information provided in the summary statistics window, she can
identify many different types of traffic behavior.

In this article, Laura walks you through two categories that she
focuses on most often during onsite analysis visits -- ICMP analysis
and IP analysis. Click here for more:

CHAPTER OF THE WEEK | SearchNetworking.com

COMPUTER NETWORKS: A SYSTEMS APPROACH, CHAPTER 1

To start us on the road toward understanding how to build a network,
this chapter does four things. First, it explores the requirements
that different applications and different communities of people (such
as network users and network operators) place on the network. Second,
it introduces the idea of a network architecture. Third, it discusses
some of the key elements in the implementation of computer networks.
Finally, it identifies the key metrics that are used to evaluate the
performance of computer networks.

NETWORK PERFORMANCE INFRASTRUCTURES - NOT YOUR FATHER'S NMS

This white paper, co-authored by Loki Jorgenson, Apparent Networks,
and Prasad Calyman, Internet2/OARnet, describes the old networking
world versus the new in terms of performance measurements and
diagnostics. It specifically details the best practices for an
effective network performance infrastructure and includes two brief
case studies. See why managing your network just isn't enough.
