Reducing file sizes to save the network
[Barrie Sosinsky]
A very large portion of the files stored on clients' disks are either duplicative or used only once. With examination, perhaps 50% of what's stored on a clients' disk could be archived without loss of functionality. Large amounts of unused data can impact network performance when it comes to technologies such as snapshot backups, mirroring, and other duplicative data technologies, causing you to invest in more equipment and
services than you might really need.

Tuning TCP
[Francesco DiMambro and Deepak Kakadia]
Transport Control Protocol (TCP) is a reliable transport layer protocol that offers a full duplex connection byte stream service. The bandwidth of TCP makes it appropriate for wide area IP networks where there is a higher chance of packet loss or reordering. This article from Informit describes some of the key TCP tunable parameters related to performance tuning.
Network testing
[Carrie Higbie]
When there are problems on a network, one sure way to narrow them down is through sniffing and testing the network. There are several testers on the market that perform various functions and provide the network manager with data to help diagnose problems. In today's article, we will look at some of the most common types of testers and take a peek at some resources that should help you determine if your tester or sniffer is up to
snuff.
