Strategic Storage: Backup starts to inch forward
[by Carol Hildebrand, Contributing Writer]

Summary: Backup has been a problem at companies for a long time and continues to be one. There are some signs that backup is moving in the right direction as storage managers apply smarter strategies through better planning and technology selection.

Corporate backup strategies are the elephant in the living room that many storage managers don't like to acknowledge. They know it's a problem and that backups fail with alarming regularity.

"Very few companies do backup well," says W. Curtis Preston, vice president at GlassHouse Technologies, a storage consultancy in Framingham, Mass. "Most have significant challenges."

In fact, backup is the top problem that most companies wrestle with when it comes to data protection, according to Peter Gerr, an analyst at Enterprise Strategy Group, a storage-focused research firm in Milford, Mass. "When we ask companies what problems they have from year to year, backup is always at the top: It takes too long, and users can't verify that the back up is even working," Gerr says. He cites an ESG report that found that about 20% of backup jobs are unsuccessful. "It's an enormous top-of-mind problem, even though it seems that we should have solved this years ago."
