Tokyo trains get WiFi Correspondents in Tokyo AUGUST 25, 2005
A NEW high-tech suburban Tokyo train has been launched with the promise of a wireless internet service allowing passengers to surf the web on the move.
The semi-private Tsukuba Express links Akihabara, Tokyo's discount electronics heartland, with Tsukuba, a campus town 58 kilometres to the north. For now, the WiFi wireless internet service, offered by NTT BP and Intel, is only at a trial stage in the train carriages and five of 20 stations along the line. But the company plans an official rollout if the trial is successful. Tsukuba, dubbed the "science city" because of its wealth of laboratories and technology firms, is pinning its hopes on the rail link to lure in a new wave of residents and hi-tech businesses.
