Exodus of R&D Centers from Korea Accelerates

Korea’s bid to become a research and development hub is flagging. In a report submitted to Uri Party lawmaker Byun Jae-il, the Ministry of Science and Technology on Monday revealed that 44 foreign research institutions closed down last year, nine of purely foreign origin and 33 joint ventures with Korea.

The number of new foreign R&D centers that opened last year was only 32. Things looked different in 2002, with 18 closures and 92 new openings. In 2003, 53 closed down but still 62 opened.

The government has tried to lure R&D centers of leading international companies to the country with the aim of building Korea up as a cutting-edge technology hub, including IT and biotech. The figures show clearly that this attempt is failing. Byun said the government should focus more on maintaining the research facilities that exist rather than bringing them in.
