Europe leads North America in IM use report

11/04/2006 by John Tilak

Eighty-two million people, or 49 per cent of the European online population,
used instant messaging (IM) applications to communicate online in February,
according to a study from Comscore Networks. In comparison, 69 million
people in North America, 37 per cent of the online population, used IM
during the same timeframe. Interestingly, the analysis showed that IM is
most heavily used in the Latin American region, with 64 per cent of the
online population using IM in February.

The MSN Messenger application has the strongest penetration worldwide, with
61 per cent of worldwide IM users using the application in February. MSN
Messenger is especially dominant in Latin America, reaching more than 90 per
cent of IM users. In Europe and Asia Pacific, the application is used by
more than 70 per cent of IM users. North America is the most competitive IM
market, with MSN Messenger, AOL/AIM and Yahoo Messenger each garnering
between 27 and 37 per cent of IM users in February.

Additional IM programmes are gaining ground, especially outside North
America. Skype is now used by 14 per cent of IM users worldwide, although it
is used by only 3 per cent of the online population in North America. Skype
appears most popular in Asia Pacific, reaching 26 per cent of the region's
IM user population.
