Apple, Samsung officially Best Friends Forever: Geez, the next thing you
know, Cupertino and Seoul will become sister cities. Samsung, which is
already the chief supplier of the NAND flash memory in Apple's iPods (see
"Apple corners holiday memory market" and "If we were doing something wrong,
how would we be making this much money?"), will now also supply the MP3
media processor for the ubiquitous players, a role filled until last week by
PortalPlayer. Jon Kang, senior vice president for the technical marketing
group at Samsung Semiconductor, said the new chip was a design based on
32-bit processor technology from ARM Holdings and called it a "PortalPlayer
killer," a usually hyperbolic tag, but close to literal in this case, given
the free-fall of PortalPlayer stock since the switch.
