Supercharged

Drivers in London may soon look back fondly on the days of the £8
($16) congestion charge. From next February, drivers of high-emission
lorries (over 12 tonnes) will have to pay £200 a day to enter a new
“low-emission zone”. The zone, part of Mayor Ken Livingstone's plan
to reduce traffic and pollution, will cover all of London's 33
boroughs: that's many more than the congestion-charge zone, which
covers central and west London only. The new charge will apply to
smaller high-emission vehicles, such as buses and trucks, from July
2008. On May 15th Mr Livingstone spoke at a summit in New York,
calling on city leaders around the world to tackle climate change.
