I see your point. In this case it's probably sensible not to allow accounts to be used when they don't have an associated protocol. The problem is that if you have two connection managers, one of which is vastly superior to the other for a particular protocol, you could have a situation where MC always takes the wrong CM. This is quite easily possible, say, with connection managers that can handle more than one protocol.
