One of the big advantage of Telepathy (the underlying framework used by Empathy) is to allow external applications to integrate IM features directly. For example the "Share my Desktop" feature has been implemented by integrating Telepathy into Vino and Vinagre (GNOME's VNC server and client). The same kind of thing could be done with existing games. Last year a summer of code student worked on a collaborative Sudoku in gnome-games. Unfortunately his work hasn't been merged :( So, our current plan is to encourage games developers to integrate Telepathy rather than shipping games in Empathy itself.
