As a followup to anyone else searching for a solution, telepathy-butterfly is apparently going to be dropped on Gnome 3.4 in favour of using MSN's XMPP implementation < http://blogs.gnome.org/danni/2011/11/17/let-us-not-mourn-telepathy-python/ >.
