As far as I know, you just can't change a field type once a container instance has been created (because it modifies the database schema according to the container definition at that time).
Sometimes when we are in the early stage of development we just delete the existing db and start again with a fresh one. Sometimes when we are too far in the process, we rename the field and give it the new type (but you loose data already entered in the previous field).
