search across virtual sites

hi,

i see search in version 5 has been refactored to enable searching across multiple virtual sites.

has anyone managed to set this up with v 4.1.1?

if so, could you advise how to get a reference to the indexes of other virtual sites (whilst honoring user/group permissioning)?
