Not really an advice on your approach, but the suggestion that if
XML.Simple gets you down then I suggest using Template::Plugin::XML::XPath
(core TT) or Template::Plugin::XML::LibXML (on the CPAN.) Both support
XPath notation and can be used to give you a little more control over
extracting data structures.
