These are two different things. $view_data is a scalar, not a member of
the %view_data hash. What you want, I think, is:
my %view_data;
$view_data{'hello'} = $hello->view;
Since you are only passing %view_data to the template, the results of
$hello->view (in $view_data) is being discarded, and not passed to
the template.
(This is really a Perl issue; because of the way Perl stores variables,
%view_data and $view_data are different, unrelated variables.)
