Though it's obviously not applicable to serving ads, one of the nice
things about using an HTTP request for something like this instead of
simply calling the executable is that you can point your HTTP request at
a server farm or caching proxy, which will almost always be faster than
generating the content (either on the remote server or locally). Using
HTTP requests in this way (proxy on the other side) has better potential
to scale.
