Have a look at Text::Chump and the associate Template::Plugin::Chump ...

Oh god, the documentation is horrible. It sounds much more complicated 
than it needs to be.

If you suspect it may help and your brain oozes out of your ears from 
reading that god awful, turgid, confusing manual then poke me with a 
stick until I tell you what you need to know and then beat me, hard, 
with hammers, until I fix the docs.
