I haven't found anything relevant on the mailing list archive.
I've now spent some time finding the cause of this and only after that
(yes, Murphy's alive and well) did I find this message from over a year ago:

which seems to explain the bug and possible solutions pretty well. He
didn't get a reply either. There's also a bug report from earlier this
year (#9389) but that only fixes the test, not the underlying problem.
