Sorry for the late reply; I was on vacation this past week.
While I'm sure there's some way to do it (although I'm not sure what
it is off the top of my head), I don't think there's any easy way to
do it.
After fiddling around with it a bit, I've settled on using a tied hash with Config::General, which will allow me to do
certain things while my variable tree is being built, such as (hopefully) storing the current "path". Of course, that
immediately led me to a lot of bizarre problems because I had forgotten one of the first things I ever learned about
TT2: XS stash don't work with tied hashes. But once I stumbled across that info again, and had struck myself in the
forehead sufficiently, it seems to be going all right.
