I think you're on the right track with django. The template system has a similar feel to TT, even if it isn't as powerful.
If you want a more powerful one, try Cheetah (www.cheetahtemplate.org) I've also seen Myghty (www.myghty.org), which is a pretty faithful re-implementation of Perl's Mason in Python. It would be nice if someone could do that for TT!
