Calling all artists for Story Installation
Project Description:
A story can be told one thousand ways. In an effort to lift
narrative from the page, Watchword Press is developing a new
performance model that will transform a conjunctive gallery and
theater space into a life-sized narrative and non-narrative multi-
medium "diorama" in reaction to one short piece of newly published
literature chosen from the upcoming issue of Watchword. We will
commission multiple artists including, but not limited to
playwrights, performance artists, dancers, musicians and visual
artists to produce new original works for a series of performance
installation events that we call Story Installations. The intent is
to bring the rich literary history of the Bay Area into contemporary
focus. Once given their assignment, each artist is encouraged to
develop elements of the story that are most appealing to them.
The main goal of this project is to create a connection between
literature and the visual and performing arts by encouraging
collaboration between all the circles of the San Francisco arts
community. Though literary events often showcase musicians, and many
literary publications showcase visual artists, the art on the walls
and the literature coexist separately; an integrated multi-media and
performance based story-telling collaboration is rarely, if ever,
achieved.
Making connections between the literary world and the art world is an
ongoing endeavor undertaken by Watchword Press. Since its foundation
in 2000, Watchword has become a thriving community of writers, visual
artists and musicians, all looking for ways to interconnect and
create new work across genre boundaries.
In the first event of the series, to be enacted on October 5th, 20
visual artists, 8 performers, and 4 musicians are invited to create
work based on the short story Life's Rich Pageant by Paul Gioch. The
work will be installed and performed in the gallery at Theatre
Artaud. The surreal world evoked in Life's Rich Pageant brings to
mind a futuristic Noah's Ark, in which the boat is a super jet, with
highly evolved stewardesses and bombastic passengers in innumerable
compartments.
Mission Statement and History of Watchword Press
Mission: Watchword Press is a nonprofit publishing house dedicated to
producing, publishing, and disseminating cutting-edge literary works
to a wide audience. We seek to publish emerging American writers and
contemporary translators who are generally underrepresented by the
larger, market-driven, commercial publishing houses, in a bi-annual
literary magazine.
