"Namespaces" are easily found in your favorite search engine for more complete 
explanation. Short answer: they are the way to validate the proper structure if 
your XML document. They are required sometimes, but especially when 
transforming one XML schema into another. A way to bind the elements to the 
namespace in a way that the same element name (row or col, for example) in the 
source and result XML can be used without confusing the two. Sort of like 
self-joins in SQL using alias' of the same table or column names as needed to 
make them unique. Whew! Not so short...
