Hi Dan,

There are 4 general strategies that I know you can take from
easiest to most complex. Here’s the list in order:

1. Use existing text gateways that Communication providers have:
You can send an email to the [email protected] or .com
Note: Providers will probably have a different gateway for multimedia
sending.

     ie. Verizon is @vtext.com
            AT&T: @txt.att.net (For pictures/video:
@mms.att.net)
            Sprint: @messaging.sprintpcs.com
            Tmobile: @tmomail.net

Here’s one site for example that has email/text gateways from all over the
world:
        http://www.emailtextmessages.com

2. Use an sms application on the server and call it from command line.

3. Integrate with the communication providers API in which case you will use a
webcall
     probably with xml.

     ie.
http://developer.verizon.com/content/vdc/en/verizon-tools-apis/verizon_apis/network-api-direct-development/networkapi_api_reference/napi_sms_api_reference/api-reference-send-sms.html

4. For large scale or high level messaging applications, look at integrating
and using
a company focused on text / voice / VOIP applications like Twilio.com

Option 2 and 3 above are really probably the same in complexity.

I’m sure there are other companies like Twilio, but I know they are among the
most advanced that I’ve seen.

Sincerely,
John
