Hi Thanks everyone for the feedback to my questions, it suggests to me that instead of picking one option, I actually need to go with all three.
I'll work up a tarball tomorrow hopefully, but for now there's trunk and a new PPA for Ubuntu packages of test releases: https://launchpad.net/~gnome-terminator/+archive/test I've just uploaded packages of 0.90-beta1 for karmic and lucid, so hopefully they'll build successfully while I'm asleep. If you already have Terminator installed and you're not using Ubuntu or you don't want to use the packages, or you just want to stay more current, install bzr and run "bzr branch lp:terminator" and you'll have a directory you can cd into and run ./terminator. IMPORTANT NOTES: This is obviously not a proper release and I don't think you should be using this for production work yet, at least not without a backup terminal. The documentation is all wrong now, I haven't updated it for the new Terminator core, so ignore the man pages, or maybe fix them :) Your config files won't work. I've changed the format so it can cope better with multiple profiles and layouts, but I haven't written the converter yet. On the plus side though, the preferences editor now saves configs, so you don't really need to hand-write one anymore. Layout support is still very patchy. I'm nowhere near done with this stuff yet, so there's no need to test it out too hard for bugs, yet. Please let me know about any snags you hit, or things that are missing. Weird bugs would best be handled by reporting them on launchpad and attaching the output of "terminator -d", but even a quick mail here would be sufficient at this point :) Thanks again!
