I have a similar problem. Ubuntu 8.04 server, so no GUI ;-( I want to convert incoming faxes received by hylafax in .tif format.
When I run tesseract: sudo tesseract fax000000083.tif ocrtest it displays 'Tesseract Open Source OCR Engine', thinks for a 10 seconds and doesn't seem to do anything. No logs, no ocrtest.txt nothing. Any ideas? Is there a debug mode? --verbose flag?
