Danny Panzer and myself are happy to announce that we recently launched a cool iPhone app powered by Tesseract 3.0, ScanBizCards, to scan business cards - or any image - and let you add all the information to your iPhone address book. Processing is done right on your phone, nothing is sent over the network.
Using the coordinates Tesseract provides along with the recognized letters, we also highlight on the image actionable elements, such as phone numbers, email addresses and URLs. Touching an item lets you call, email or browse on the spot even before or instead of adding the information into the address book. Finally, just for the Tesseract fans out there, we added as part of the animation while the scan is in progress a display of the boxes returned by the layout analysis, one by one in the order we scan them (this particular feature is not in the current V1.1 version, will be available as soon as Apple approves V1.2). Even if you have no interest in business cards, you might find it useful as a tool for scanning any image on your iPhone to see what Tesseract can do (we have a free "lite" version on the App Store, no worries). More on www.scanbizcards.com I'd like to reach out to any interested Tesseract practitioner on this forums in two ways: 1. We are still very much non-experts in the Tesseract inner workings and we don't do any image pre-processing yet: we'd love to co-opt anyone with know-how in utilizing Tesseract in better ways and/or smart image pre-processing as an advisor to help us bring the scan quality to the next level 2. I would also like to extend an invitation to anyone with plans to develop an OCR-based iPhone app for whatever purpose to talk to us for a possible cooperation, to save significant time in avoiding duplicating the work we already did to process images w/Tesseract on the phone.
