I take it back. With the interface provided by that file-sharing site,
there is one way to end up with a JPEG, but there's another way to end
up with a TIFF.
I've also had very poor results when trying to train tesseract on small
sizes of text so I'm unable to help there.

Eugene, what do you mean? I saved this in photoshop as a TIF. I just
downloaded it from drop.io to make sure it wasn't getting converted,
and it is still a TIF. What am I missing here?
In addition, I played around with this some more, and if I use 12px
size font rather than 11px size font and recreate the same image, it
works fine, and tesseract does not crash. However, that does not
solve my problem, since if I train tesseract on the 12px font and then
try to have it read 11px font, it does not work at all.
So what are my options?
