The first version of the source documentation is now available. The
conversion of the documentation is far from complete, but baseapi is
covered, and thanks to Doxygen's wonderful macro features, the
documentation for user settable variables (as well as their default
values) is too. (It's not the most convenient, and I intend to gather
them all in a man page, but it should be an improvement on hunting
through the source).

If you don't intend to hack on Tesseract itself, you really don't need
anything else.

The documentation is available in HTML only; PDF may come at some
point in the future. If you want CHM or some other proprietary format,
you get to generate that yourself.
