Thanks for the reply, Zdenko. Repeated the installation of Tesseract,
with success. (Apparently, I ran ./configure for Tesseract before
installing Leptonica, but ran make and make install after)

You're probably right. Konqueror reported it as a TIFF image, but
without the .tiff file type. I repeated the scan, and out.tiff was
created.

FYI, there is no installation of tesseract in Mandriva 2010.2.
