I will reply to my own question :) The build for Mac was very easy and went smooth on my build machine (Mac OS X 10.6). Pretty much: ./configure make sudo make install
For my particular use I had to use otool and install_name_tool to create a relocateable tesseract application that can be distributed with my program. If there is interest in how to it - I will post the commands. So far I am very impressed with tesseract and hope to have a version of fopydo with tesseract in a few weeks.
