Thanks for the link.  I've downloaded and installed it.

The first problem I'm encountering (and it doesn't matter if I load
one of the
.TIF files or I load up the original PDF source), is that when I click
on the OCR
to start the conversion I get the "please select a language" dialog.
I went
though all the menu options and didn't find anything amiss.  Can you
tell me
where I set this to English?  (I've already checked the web via google
to see
if others found this problem.)

I used the desktop icon to start the program, in case that is
important.

Turns out the PDF itself is composed of 300x300 images, by the way.
