What an installation monitoring program does is
keep track of what files get installed when you
run "make install" on a machine.  You can then
look at the list and see what was added.  You
can probably also use the program to make a
tar file for you.  It just makes it easier to
make sure you are not missing any files when
you package them together for copying to another
machine.  It also makes it easy to delete the
files later without leaving any of them behind.

You won't need it in this case, but it comes in
handy if you like to build and install stuff from
source packages yourself.
