http://code.google.com/p/tesseract-ocr/wiki/Compiling

The instructions are at this link are no good for someone like me who has
never compiled, built, or made a package. They say "the compilation process
should be familiar." Well that's not the case for me.

The instructions said to do ./configure but when I did, nothing happened.
Then I tried to unpack all the files into my download directory, then I
tried to 'mv tesseract-ocr/tessdata $TESSDATA_PREFIX' if defined
TESSDATA_PREFIX' but nothing happened either.

I followed the instructions as best I could and read the FAQ but I think
the process failed because the instructions are written for people who have
done this before.

I don't even know what version of tesseract I have or haven't managed to
install. I think I am still stuck in an old version from my L(ubuntu) 1.10
Linux version 3.0.0-22-generic-pa installation, because when I check the
man tesseract page it tells me 2009 and there is no instruction about
checking the version.

I also don't know how to check directories to see if stuff has been
installed properly or where it should have been installed. The instructions
assume I know about these things.

I'd be grateful for any help.
