Sriranga, this has noting to do with Ubuntu (or any other operating system). This is related to user experience and understanding of error messages. This is not problem.
Problem is that he did not try so solve this common (not tesseract related) problem by himself. When I put to google "checking whether the c++ compiler works... no Ubuntu" I got 242 000 hits. I believe this is reason why nobody replied.
