Solved! The symbolic link to point to the right library was the correct action, but it did not show up due to library caching (when will we be done with this arcane system stuff? would you geeks get your act in gear so us app programmer do not need to suffer so!). This thread, * http://stackoverflow.com/questions/8039562/cannot-open-shared-object-file, showed me that I needed to run "sudo ldconfig" to clear the cache and then the tests started working.*
