Thanks for your post. I am also very, very interested to improve tesseract. 
I am also asked for cube training for a while – with no answer.

I am very motivated to test tesseract, recreate a better german fraktur 
training set and I could also help to improve code. To do this I need to 
understand parts of tesseract and therefore I need more information about 
the actual way how tesseract uses things which is not well enough 
documented. The same frustrating experience with ocropus, too. :(
