You can give a try to textcleaner script from http://www.fmwconcepts.com/imagemagick/textcleaner/ which uses imagemagick. His page has a number of other scripts - maybe you will find something else that works for you.
I am on windows so havent been able to use the scripts which are in bash (I think). Hope this helps.
