It looks as though Mint Maya is based on Ubuntu Precise Pangolin. Therefore, I suggest you try to install the .debs for precise: https://launchpad.net/~jeffreyratcliffe/+archive/ppa/+files/libsane-perl_0.05-0~ppa1_amd64.deb https://launchpad.net/~jeffreyratcliffe/+archive/ppa/+files/gscan2pdf_1.1.3-0~ppa1precise_all.deb If that goes OK, you won't need --force.
