Actually, I dumped the UIImage that goes into tesseract, thinking the same thing.
It looks like this: http://d.pr/i/RYGi To my mind, that looks very clean, which I was able to confirm by giving that image to the command line version and observing that the output was good. So I was thinking of fetching the latest version of tesseract and rebuilding, in case the version that was checked in was garbage. Rob.
