Why are you doing it that way?  Your user should be able to run it, but
also why not use the gui or shortcut key or even the power button to
trigger the suspend?

doing it from command line was to see something, e.g. errors or such

Try the other methods and see if that makes any difference. Particularly the power button.

I need to correct myself:
6.16.x also does not perform an suspend
I waited not enough to notize this kernel wakes up too (after a somewhat longer 
period), sorry

Is there any kernel that does work?
