The default font tetex uses seems to be computer modern(OT1/cmr/m/n). However if you specify a font incorrectly LaTex says something LaTeX Font Warning: Font shape `T1/arialarss/m/n' undefined (Font) using `T1/cmr/m/n' instead and uses the ec fonts in the jknappen directory.
