Re: texconfig fails in 'make install'

Update: I set the env variable TEXMF={/usr/local/teTeX/share/texmf/}. With
that variable set, I can find fmtutil.cnf; now it fails on modes.mf
(kpsewhich modes.mf), which is apparently about 4 lines down in texconfig.
modes.mf is (again) right there in 
/usr/local/teTeX/share/texmf/metafont/misc/.
