Hello all,
While trying to typeset a document using Bitstream Charter, I ran into
some strangeness. I'm using the teTeX version found on the latest TeXlive
CD-ROM set, ported to the BeOS.
First of all, there don't seem to be any .fd's for Charter, so I made my
own little OT1bch.fd, containing
\DeclareFontShape{OT1}{bch}{b}{n}{<->bchb8a}{}
\DeclareFontShape{OT1}{bch}{b}{it}{<->bchbi8a}{}
\DeclareFontShape{OT1}{bch}{m}{n}{<->bchr8a}{}
\DeclareFontShape{OT1}{bch}{m}{it}{<->bchri8a}{}
I also had to make some symlinks because the afm's are of the bch*8a
fonts, whereas the actual pfb's are bch*8v (containing Vietnamese?).
I couldn't get smallcaps to work though, because there is no bchc8a font.
Next, I tried making my own vf for a "fake" smallcaps, since afm2tfm has
an option for that.
Running
afm2tfm /boot/apps/texmf/fonts/afm/bit/charter/bchr8a.afm -V bchr8a
(similarly for the other three fonts) got me the tfm's and vpl's; after
that using vptovf gave me the vf's. First thing I noticed is that the
tfm's created by afm2tfm are much smaller than the ones generated by
vptovf, and I am using the latter.
Now, the interesting part: Using a small test file containing only
\font\bch=bchr8a
\bch Test of Bitstream Charter

got me

I remember that at my university, using small caps in Charter "just
worked" (using UnixTeX). But perhaps they had bought the proper font.
Therefore, I am not quite sure this is a teTeX problem (and hence whether
this is appropriate for this list) but it seems there are fd's for most
other font families.
Tips on how to get fake small caps working in Bitstream Charter are most
welcome.
