The T1-fontencoding is something that differs a lot from your
"problem". TeX was written some years ago and used 7 bit font
encoding (up to 128 char, ascii). This are the original fonts. The T1 font
are 8 bit fonts (up to 256 char, eg. iso-latin 1).
If you are just using English, there should be no difference
between the two font sets. If you are writing in German (like me)
there is a big differnce (regarding hyphantion), but no difference
regarding how the fonts are diplayed on screen. This is a question
on which fonts are used for the document and which program is used.
There are two quite common possibilies. You use the original
TeX-Fonts or the T1 (=>ec) Fonts or you use postscript fonts (Type
1).
The TeX fonts look quite ugly in acrobat reader, however printing is
TeX quality.
