Thanks for your answer

The problem is that I have to work with the updmap that is installed with
the user's computers. It may contain some local adaptations already.

But is there any way to write a package that will work on existing tetex
installations?

I was thinking about a workaround to add one 'mypackage/*' to the updmap
script's extras section, and remove it in the uninstall script (and later
call updmap in both cases). But then-again, I am not guaranteed that the
updmap script will not change...
