The problem was some white spaces in the TeX macros I had included in the
pmx source, thanks to the many people who helped me on this. The reason I
didn't see it myself was that I had obtained these macros from
Andre van Ryckeghe (through the tex-music list!) and so never looked
there (I should hasten to add that it was me, not Andre, who
inserted the white spaces on copying the macros!).

Some people commented on the piece. It is, of course, not by me, but the
1st movement of a quartet by J. Chr. Bach, erroneously attributed to
Josef Haydn for many years; and I had only a published copy of the
individual voices, but couldn't find a full score anywhere, so I write
one as a first exercise in pmx ...

Christian: as with the Bartok Romanian Dances, I doubt if it can legally
go into the archive: the voices were published by Edition Eulenburg
(Z"urich/New York) probably not long ago, and there may be some
copyright on it!?
