Since the file needs to be (g)unzipped before untarring, another thing
you can try (if the file is not corrupted), is:

gunzip -c pmx-unix-230.tgz | tar xvf -

..from the folder where you want to unpack it.  The message containing
"unexpected end of file" usually means it has been truncated, perhaps
during the download.

No, the file works OK for me.

I suspect it must have been corrupted during download process. Maybe
your browser automatically unzipped the file? (Though in that case
the message should have been "gzip: stdin: not in gzip format".)

Please try "file pmx-unix-230.tgz" to determine the file format.
