Bob Tennent once helped me with a similar problem, i.e. forcing small
note size in a right hand harpsichord staff. I attach a small file with
the tex macros doing so. Maybe you'll be able to adapt it to your
purposes.

use \zcharnote which will allow you to place anything anywhere in the
score.
