Hmm - for me, the following minimalistic example works fine:

\input musixtex      \input musixlyr
\setlyrics1{s\`{\i}} \assignlyrics11
\startextract\NOtes\qa g\en\endextract\bye

The used versions are:
MiKTeX 2.1
MusiXTeX(c) T.103 <8 July 2001>
MusiXLYRics 2.0a <September 04, 2001>

You may try what TeX regards as \i's definition. For me, this is:
*\show\i

The same for \`:
*\show\`

#1->{\accent 18 #1}.

Do you get something different?
